Use one gross savings budget to compare when taxes are paid, how planned withdrawals interact with RMDs, and how a mixed tax-bucket strategy may change lifetime outcomes.

Timeline and account assumptions

The first modeled age.
Planned drawdowns begin the following modeled year.
The ending age, capped at 95 because the modeled IRS Uniform Lifetime factors end there.
Choose the required-minimum-distribution starting age assumed for this educational projection.

This calculator compares tax treatment after account access is established. Eligibility, deductions, contribution limits, and available Roth features vary by account. Review Step 7 for IRA-specific eligibility and backdoor-Roth guidance, and verify workplace-plan features in the plan document.

Balances, contributions, and drawdown

Existing tax-free retirement assets modeled as qualified Roth dollars.
Current pre-tax retirement assets subject to future ordinary-income tax and RMDs.
The annual gross, before-tax cash-flow budget kept equal across every modeled mix.
A constant educational assumption applied after distributions and conversions.
The current marginal rate applied to the gross Roth contribution share before it enters the account.
The marginal tax rate applied to modeled Traditional distributions in retirement.
The annual drawdown in today's dollars, inflated to each future year and drawn after contributions end.
Used to translate today's planned drawdown into future dollars.

Balance and drawdown through age 95

View the RMD schedule used in this projection

RMDs are not increased by the entered inflation rate. Each modeled RMD equals the prior December 31 Traditional balance divided by the current IRS Uniform Lifetime factor for that age. Inflation changes the planned drawdown target, while the available planned drawdown is capped at the projected Roth and Traditional balance available that year. Returns, withdrawals, contributions, and conversions change the balance used in the RMD calculation.

The Uniform Lifetime factors are not annually inflation-indexed, but future law or IRS regulations can revise the table. A different Joint and Last Survivor table may apply when a spouse more than ten years younger is the sole beneficiary; that exception is not modeled. Review the current RMD source and methodology before acting.

Educational estimate using flat marginal rates and current 2026 RMD rules. It does not model tax brackets, state tax, Social Security, Medicare IRMAA, ACA credits, inheritance, every Roth five-year rule, or plan-specific conversion restrictions. Roth values assume qualified treatment in retirement.

These tools are provided for educational purposes only and do not constitute financial, investment, tax, legal, or planning advice. Results are estimates based on the assumptions you provide, and actual outcomes may differ. Past performance is not indicative of future returns. Consider consulting a qualified professional before making financial decisions.

How to read this chart

Use the balance line for remaining tax-advantaged assets and the bars for planned distributions and RMD pressure. Compare cumulative taxes with modeled after-tax ending value—not ending balance alone.
